The town of Mosselbaai is home to the Southern Cape website, from where we travel through the regions on southern Africa. We have lived here for more than thirty years and seen it grow from a small fishing and harbour town, with a fruit cannery, powdered and condensed milk factories and a petroleum industry... into a rotting tourist-trap!
The website started as the result of a discussion about the policies and effectiveness of the various “tourism bureaux” in the region. In our opinion, their focus is mainly on advertising accommodation and privately-owned attractions, without bothering to inform visitors and locals about our history and heritage. To them our biodiversity and cultural is unimportant.. all that matters is that their members, the “product owners,” make money. They would rather you visit a game-farm (and pay to see animals in an unnatural setting) than take a walk (for free) through the indigenous forest at Groeneweide.
We therefore decided to prove them wrong by creating this website. Our aim is not to fill guest houses and hotels, but to enrich your life with the knowledge that our world exists. Of course, you’re welcome to visit. And after you’ve seen what we have to offer, you probably will. (Indirect marketing at work.)
The second purpose of the website is to make information freely available and globally accessible about southern Africa. We’re doing what other institutions and people should be doing.
But mainly because we’re proud of our regions and enjoy sharing the knowledge.
If you find this website useful or just enjoy looking at the pictures, please support us by contributing original photographs and documents. All stuff relating to southern Africa are welcome. And if it’s not already on the site, we’ll put it on... such as your town or hobby.
