Invaluable as it contains all the commands and registers for any standard modem.

Advanced Linux Networking
2002, Addison-Wesley, 0201774232
This book is an overview of the common server “services” available on Linux and surprisingly provides rather indepth information. Another plus is that it is not biased towards a particular distro, like most other books about Linux. In short, this book shows one what a Linux server can do and how to do a basic setup of a particular service. Very highly recommended, which is rare for a computer book.

Beginning Ajax with PHP
2007, Apress, 1590596676
The book attempts to teach the reader how to use Ajax and PHP together. After reading (and skimming) through it, I was left with more questions than answers. Firstly, the author doesn’t discuss Ajax and the different methods and properties of the XMLHttpRequest object in any depth, meaning the reader still needs to find the real information somewhere else. Secondly, the examples are not only trivial, but in many cases can be done much better in pure JavaScript (like the calendar). Thirdly, the author devotes too much time in discussing how MySQL works, which is not necessary in my opinion. And lastly, the code in the book is somewhat shoddy, uses outdated functions (like escape() in the JavaScript), but worst of all doesn’t provide the reader with an effective Ajax general library of functions. Not recommended.

Cascading Style Sheets: The Definitive Guide
2000 (first edition), O’Reilly, 1565926226
2006 (third edition), O’Reilly, 0596527330
This book really is the definitive guide to CSS. It covers everything (up to CSS2.1 in the 3rd edition) and more by discussing each directive and its properties and with plenty of examples. The chapter on selectors is worth the price of the book alone. You cannot attempt any serious implementation of CSS without first reading it. Highly recommended.

Don’t Make Me Think!
2000, New Riders, 0789723107
I am always dumbfounded when discussing website usability with top designers (or so they proclaim to be) and learning that they have never read this book. Usually this fact then also shows in their work. Well, the title says it all and is exactly how nearly all website users feel. If you are serious about creating usable websites that do not frustrate users and drive customers away, then read this book. Or else suffer the consequences.

This is one of those books that are both utterly useless and completely invaluable at the same time. Basically a rehash of the online PHP manual (hence utterly useless), it becomes an invaluable resource when working onsite (behind firewalls and no Internet access). But then again, why not just download the PHP manual onto removable media? Outdated
