The Kirkoff Case
1974 – Series 1, Episode 1

Caledonia – It’s Worth a Fortune
1974 – Series 1, Episode 12

Unfortunately she only knows the name of the town, because the directions he gave to his old partner in crime. Forced to work together to find the loot, Rockford has his hands full trying to keep the peace and deal with the other ex-cons looking for an easy score. The top-notch performances make this a very watchable and above-average episode.

1974 – Series 1, Episodes 13 & 14
Rockford is assaulted and a potential client kidnapped. A day or so later he's arrested for filing a false police report, as the man denies everything. In an attempt to clear himself, Rockford starts to ask questions about the man’s employer, Fiscal Dynamics Inc. Soon he’s threatened with a $10 million lawsuit by the president of FDI and is hired by the wife of a previous employee. Rockford figures out the scam and nails the bad guy. An excellent two-parter, with the garbage disposal unit ultimately saving the day.

Aura Lee, Farewell

Sleight of Hand
1975 – Series 1, Episode 16

Counter Gambit
1975 – Series 1, Episode 17
Moss Williams is about to be released from prison and hires Rockford to find his girlfriend, who has suddenly stopped corresponding. Although Rockford tracks her down, it seems Moss is really after a pearl necklace he and Harry Crown stole a few years back and left in the care of the girlfriend. An insurance investigator is also after the necklace. But then it all goes wrong...
The safe-cracking technique is ingenious, Angel as weasily as ever and the scams brilliant. Definitely one of the best episodes.

Claire
1975 – Series 1, Episode 18

Say Goodbye to Jennifer
1975 – Series 1, Episode 19
Rockford is hired by an ex-army buddy to find a model who is on the run after her boyfriend was murdered. A very weak and dragging episode.

Charlie Harris At Large
1975 – Series 1, Episode 20
Charlie Harris’s wife is murdered and he’s the prime suspect. Only he has an alibi who won't come forward — the woman he’s having an affair with, but doesn’t know her real name. Eventually Rockford tracks her down, but she casts doubt on Charlie’s innocence. So Rockford devises a weak scam to force her into exonerating Charlie and inadvertently he catches the real killer. Somewhat entertaining episode with good performances all round.

The Four Pound Brick
1975 – Series 1, Episode 21

Just By Accident
1975 – Series 1, Episode 22

Roundabout
1975 – Series 1, Episode 23
Rockford is hired to deliver an insurance cheque to a singer in Las Vegas. Only she is very reluctant to accept the money and when they try to bank it, it is revealed that she has over $300 000 already in the account. Quickly it is figured that her manager is using her act to launder money for the mob. Anyway, with the help of a Japanese investor, Rockford fixes everything.
The chase at the end is hilarious, but the “bug off” scene really stupid. Anyway, a somewhat entertaining episode.

The Aaron Ironwood School of Success
1975 – Series 2, Episode 1
Aaron Ironwood was fostered by the Rockfords and is now a multi-millionaire. However, he reveals that he has some business troubles and signs over all his wealth to Jim. But when the buyers turn out to be the mob, Rockford quickly sells. Then the Feds turn up, as the whole company was a pyramid scheme. Anyway, the mobsters are now out for revenge, as Jim sold them a “bucket of sand” for twenty million. An average episode, with a lot of good talent wasted on minor roles.

The Farnsworth Stratagem
1975 – Series 2, Episode 2

Gearjammers
1975 – Series 2, Episodes 3 & 4

The Deep Blue Sleep
1975 – Series 2, Episode 5
Beth hires Rockford to investigate the disappearance (and death) of an old friend working as a model for a fashion company. Here he uncovers a mob money-laundering setup. An average episode.

The Great Blue Lake Land and Development Company
1975 – Series 2, Episode 6
Rockford overnights in a small Nevada town and, as they have no bank, entrusts $10 000 to the safe of a land developer. Next morning the person who had signed the receipt is non-existent and the money gone. Jim enlists the help of Rocky and a conman to get to the bottom of things. A very enjoyable episode in typical Rockford fashion.
In the light of all the real estate developments in my area, this episode is disturbingly applicable. Like Rocky said: “Out there where there’s nothing but sand and jack-rabbits, he tried to sell me a boat. A boat!
”

The Real Easy Red Dog
1975 – Series 2, Episode 7
Rockford is hired by a woman to investigate the suicide of her sister, only to discover that it was all a setup by another P.I. to lure the cops away from an insurance recovery. Problem is that Rockford believes the sister was really murdered. A good episode, with Stefanie Powers giving a cracker performance. I especially enjoyed the “you’re a lousy shot
” remark by her to the bad guy.

Resurrection in Black & White
1975 – Series 2, Episode 8
Rockford is hired by a reporter to investigate a six-and-a-half year old murder. So-so episode, with Jim’s usual gorilla-suit line reversed on him the probable highlight.

Chicken Little is a Little Chicken
1975 – Series 2, Episode 9
Angel hides $30 000 in the panel of the left door of Rockford’s car. Soon some nasties arrive and Angel is implicated in the swindle of the year. Jim conceives a con involving a shell-game with several briefcases at Angel’s funeral to resolve the matter. Does it work? Good, solid episode.

Nevertheless, he’s retained to purchase the other two birds. But when these are also deliberately destroyed, Jim starts to investigate and uncovers a diamond smuggling operation. Good episode which again draws on Rockford’s initial confused state to create humour along with suspense.

Where’s Houston?
1976 – Series 2, Episode 20
The granddaughter of a friend of Rocky is kidnapped. Or so it seems at first, because the grandfather is murdered and the granddaughter returns from a business trip. Rockford investigates and uncovers a real estate shake-down. One of the weaker episodes.

Foul on the First Play
1976 – Series 2, Episode 21
Rockford is hired by his old parole officer to investigate a possible basketball fix, but soon finds himself in a big mess when things are not as they were presented. Not much of a story, but Louis Gossett makes the episode as the smooth-talker down on his luck.

1976 – Series 2, Episode 22
Rockford is asked by an old girlfriend to deliver some escrow papers. Only problem is that the briefcase contains funny money and Jim gets nailed by the Feds. Released with a tail, he investigates and uncovers a scam within a scam. Nicely done.

Angel’s latest scam is to hire out as a hitman and then disappear with the down-payment. Only his first client has other plans and when Angel doesn’t fullfill the contract, they come after Rockford for information. Seems like this job involves a Soviet spy network, a secret formula and a suspicious navy officer who is playing it too close to the chest. You’'ll literally laugh out loud at the end when the formula is revealed. One of the few really good fifth series episodes.
