Review
I bought this lens in November 2009 for R700,00 on www.bidorbuy.co.za, as part of a deal I made for a Canon EOS 3. It is used on the Canon EOS 300v, as a replacement for the EF 28-90mm f/4-5.6 II kit lens.
It is a heavy lens, but when coupled with a light camera (like the EOS 300v) it feels just right. Auto-focus is medium speed. This version of the lens does not work on digital bodies.
Update: For some reason it now refuses to work correctly with the EOS 300v, but still works with the EOS 3. Bummer, but that is apparently to be expected from a Sigma lens. So it will most probably find its way onto an auction site in the near future.
Update: It seems the problem lies with the automatic aperture. The lens works fine with the aperture wide open (f/2.8), but as soon as the aperture needs to be closed down then it malfunctions. Support from Sigma South Africa (i.e. Tudor Photographic) is non-existant in that they do not respond to emails or return telephone calls. So, even though Sigma lenses are cheaper than the corresponding Canon lenses, they’re definitely “disposable” in the sense of when your camera croaks, don’t expect your Sigma lens to work on the replacement.
Update: I’ve sold this lens, together with the Canon EOS 3. Goodbye Sigma, and good riddance.
Recommended: Maybe
