Herbertsdale

Introduction

Next to PetroSA (“Mossgas”) a minor road branches off the N2 to Herbertsdale, 30 kilometres to the north. The road runs through farming country and is in itself a pleasant drive, made interesting by various sights along the way, from white storks in summer to curiously-formed rocks stacked in cultivated fields. And likely as not you’ll have to pause at least once for a flock of sheep or ostriches being herded in the opposite direction! Herbertsdale is a picturesque little agricultural community nestled in the gorge of the Langtou River. The very fertile alluvial soil yields rich crops of lucerne and fruit, and some of the farms have been in the possession of the resident families for more than a century. The small town, which is part of the Greater Mossel Bay Municipality, is well worth a visit for its typical architectural styles.
