Anybody visiting the Southern Cape should make time to turn off at Stilbaai. This former exclusively seasonal holiday resort has blossomed into a dynamic tourist destination living up to its hype. The hiking trail starting at the Info office should not be missed. Laid out among the houses up to a remarkable viewing site, it is easy to walk even for those not so fit and well worth the extra hour or so. Stilbaai also boasts extensive shell middens left by prehistoric peoples and many ancient stone fish traps are still in use today. Of special interest and easy to find by following the directions, is the big eel hole, evidence of the edible eels inhabiting the streams and valleys of this area. The National Historical Trust is now funding the renovation of the old fisherman’s cottages in the area.
